Fillings & Restorations
Tooth-coloured light-cure fillings that blend invisibly, or hard-wearing silver amalgam for back teeth. Whichever suits the tooth and your budget.
Detailed guide coming shortly
We are writing a full guide to fillings & restorations: what it involves, how many visits it takes, whether it hurts, how long it lasts and what it costs. In the meantime, ask us anything directly and we will answer honestly.
Your options
Both are available at either clinic. Which suits your tooth depends on where it is and how hard it has to work. We will talk it through before starting.
Light-cure composite (tooth-coloured)
A resin matched to the shade of your tooth, bonded in place and hardened with a curing light. It is shaped and polished in the same visit, and once set it is difficult to tell from the tooth around it.
Usually chosen for: Front teeth and anywhere the filling would show
Silver amalgam
The traditional silver-grey filling, an alloy of silver, tin, copper and mercury. It is hard-wearing, has the longest track record of any filling material, and costs less. It is visible, and mercury content is something patients often want to ask about. Please do, and the dentist will talk you through it.
Usually chosen for: Back teeth, where chewing force is highest and appearance matters less
